MONDAY MOTIVATION: Fitness Ideas for the Whole Family

With the burst of warmer weather coming it's been exciting to think about getting outside again, but it also makes me think about how so many people become sedentary during the cold winter months including kids. Being sedentary is one of the worst things you can do for your body.  It can be defined as any waking behavior characterized by a low energy expenditure while in a sitting or reclining posture. Many people, especially those who work in an office can find themselves sitting for more than 12 hours per day! In addition, when it gets cold and it's harder to be outside and be active, even our kids end up sitting longer.  More TV watching and more activities done while sitting are the easy way to pass a day when you're stuck inside.  

BUT it doesn't have to be that way just because it's cold outside.  Here is a list of ideas for the whole family to keep active and moving throughout the day.  

Parents:
  • If you are at an office job where you do lots of sitting, set an alarm on your calendar or your watch to remind you to get up move.  A good goal to shoot for is 5-10 minutes every hour.  That can be standing up at your desk and doing some stretches, leg lifts, marching in place, etc. or walking around the office (taking a bathroom break, delivering a message to someone in person rather than calling, filling up your water bottle, walking the stairs, etc.).
  • Do some simple stretches at your desk (Not sure what to do? Have your HR person hire us to provide "The Office Stretch" workshop)

Kids:
  • Make a fort
  • Create an obstacle course around the house and time each other
  • Bundle up and walk the dog
  • Make up a dance routine
  • Do a simple 20 minute fun exercise routine
  • Play hide and seek
  • Practice gymnastics
  • Play catch

Expending energy throughout the day will keep you healthier, help to prevent diseases, help you sleep better, reduce stress, and keep your body feeling better all over!
