Last month in our monthly poll we asked some questions about how well you know your minerals and micronutrients.  Here are the results:

Q1 - True or False: You can only get calcium in foods from dairy sources such as milk, yogurt and cheese.
A: FALSE
While most dairy provides a great source of calcium, it is not the only way.  About 2/3 of you got this one right.  In fact, some of the top sources of calcium are not dairy! Here is a great list of calcium rich foods that are non-dairy:
  • Edamame and Tofu
  • Broccoli
  • Dark leafy greens (kale, turnip greens, mustard greens, etc.)
  • White beans
  • Sesame seeds
  • Butternut Squash
  • Almonds

Q2 - Why does the body need potassium?
A: All of the Above 
You all got this one right.  The body needs potassium for the following reasons:
  • To control the electrical activity of the heart
  • To help build proteins
  • To maintain the PH balance of the blood
  • To help breakdown and use carbohydrates

Q3 - True of False: Only women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need to consume folate or folic acid.
A: False
Folic Acid, also known as Vitamin B9, is very important for pregnant women but it is also a key nutrient that everyone should have. Some of it's key functions are: 
  • The synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA
  • Aiding rapid cell division and growth
  • Enhancing brain health
  • Age-related hearing loss
